Office 2016 (Part 2)

Continuing from last month’s story, we take a check list approach to the new features in the Office suite.

Office Generic

Tell Me - is a new function that lets you simply search for the feature or task you’re looking for and it brings the option up. It’s available in Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Equation editor in Word, PowerPoint and Excel will now convert a hand-written equation scrawled in its input field into one that looks like it was typed in.

Smart Lookup - will provide you with contextual information about words and phrases you need to know more about

Excel

6 new charts
Power Query

Word

Collaborate on Word documents in real time

Outlook

Set the sharing settings of OneDrive files as you send them
Attachment enhancement – Office apps recent documents

PowerPoint

Collaborate on presentations in real time

Sway

Sway is a presentation program and is part of the Microsoft Office family of products. It’s is a universal app that is designed to help you create digital stories in which you can share ideas, concepts and reports. It’s a presentation tool, somewhat similar to PowerPoint. However, while PowerPoint is designed to work best for creating static, fixed presentations, the Sway application works best when you want to create a more narrative focused story.

Another major difference between Sway and other presentation apps is the fact that the whole editing process is like designing your own web page.

Windows 10 (Part 3)

This month we take a look at another three tips and tricks that you can use with Windows 10.

Tip 1 - Schedule Windows updates

Instead of getting ambushed whenever Microsoft decides to push out a patch, you can schedule restarts to install updates by going to Start > Settings > Updates and Recovery > Windows Update. You can do this for future updates as well by selecting Notify to Schedule Restart.

Tip 2 - Run it in a virtual machine

If you’re thinking of taking the Windows 10 plunge, but don’t want to disturb your machine that’s currently running just fine, you can install Windows 10 in a virtual machine first. Note that this is different than the virtual desktops I mentioned above; it’s virtualizing the entire OS within another OS (your existing one).

Tip 3 - Windows Explorer Home tab and Quick Access

Windows Explorer is a lot more useful this time around, thanks to a new Home tab. It makes copying files easier. You will also see a new Quick Access group that lets you navigate to recently accessed folders. That makes it much easier to maintain a fast workflow as you navigate around your computer’s file system. And while File Explorer defaults to the Quick Access view, if you don’t like it, you can set it back to This PC by choosing View > Options > Open File Explorer > This PC.
