SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) Part 1

SEO should play an important part of any company's web strategy. It is the main element that determines whether your website is positioned at the top of an Internet search or many pages down.

For the best placement in a search engine such as Google (the only one that really matters and the main focus of our story) you have to play nice and appease Google's every whim. This can be achieved through effective SEO. If you don't play nice and attempt to exploit this goliath through less than desirable methods, you March find your site banned.

SEO is a tough game. Once you have learnt the correct methods to promote your site, Google turns around and creates a new Algorithm to change the way it catalogues websites. Google changes its Algorithm every couple of months. Some professional SEO companies provide services that will assess changes and react appropriately.

Next month we will take a look at some of the strategies you can put in place to achieve optimal positioning for your website.

Generic Office - Ribbons (Part 1 of 4)

In part 1 of this 4 part series, we take a look at creating a Ribbon. Ribbons are revamped toolbars that we used to see prior to the creation of Office 2007 (with the exception of Microsoft Project and Visio. They were updated to the new ribbon interface in Office 2010). The use of this function is available in the Microsoft Office 2010 suite of programs.

Step 1,

Open Microsoft Word

Step 2,

Select File, Options, Customize Ribbon

Step 3,

Click on the Home tab (top right side of the current window pane) and then select the New Tab button

Step 4

Right click on the New Tab menu item in your list (should appear close to the Home tab) and select Rename.

Step 5,

Type "Extra" (without quotes) and select OK

Step 6,

Right click on New Group (sits directly under Extra), select Rename and type "Extra" (without quotes). Then select OK.

Step 7,

Click on the top icon (Accept and Move to Next) in the left side of the window pane and click on Add. Repeat again to add the Align left and Breaks functions then press OK.

Your ribbon should appear similar to the picture below.

  • Next time we look at the Quick Access toolbar.
